Maximizing Privacy and Design with Bathroom Partition Layouts

Commercial Bathroom Partitions

Bathroom partitions are small enclosures surrounding a toilet. They are designed to provide privacy for the user while in the restroom. But when you're planning the layout of your partitions, you may feel overwhelmed by your seemingly limitless choices.

Understanding your facility and the needs of your patrons will make choosing your bathroom partition layout simpler. These dividers are not cheap, and selecting the wrong ones could be costly. You can avoid basic mistakes when you know everything there is to know about bathroom partitions and their layouts.

Choosing Your Bathroom Design

It may not seem like an essential factor, but the design of your bathroom can heavily influence your business. First and foremost, your bathroom must adhere to the standards set by the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) and several other building codes to ensure it is safe and accessible to everyone.

You can start creating your restroom layout by asking yourself these questions.

How Much Traffic Will Your Bathroom See?

Your bathroom should accommodate the largest number of people you expect to see at a given time. For example, a busy restaurant on Valentine's Day will likely see more traffic than it might in the days preceding. Plan your design with your busiest seasons in mind.

What Aesthetic Do You Want Your Restroom to Have?

Bathrooms are an extension of your business and should therefore match your professional aesthetic. If you have a sophisticated 5-star business, your restroom should reflect the refinery and class of your other rooms. In contrast, strip malls and other retail chains likely will not have the same expensive fixtures or flooring in their restrooms.

What's Your Budget?

You'll want to get the most for your dollar, but you shouldn’t sacrifice quality in your bathroom design. Create various plans and discuss your options with a professional to help you maintain your budget.

Building codes and guidelines vary from city to city and state to state. Research the regulations that apply to your business to ensure that you will adhere to them. This is especially important if you are building a brand-new facility — if you fail to meet code specifications, you could be denied a building permit.

Building codes help keep your facility safe for everyone. These regulations can help you define what your restroom will look and feel like. When your commercial space is for corporate employees or a restaurant, you'll also have to follow the Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines.

Does It Meet ADA Requirements?

Every commercial bathroom must provide access to the general public, including those with disabilities. The ADA has a set of requirements that ensure everyone has equal access to public restrooms. Your bathroom layout must be ADA-compliant and include at least one accessible bathroom stall.

Typically, there must be a minimum of 30 inches of space in the stall and a door wide enough for a wheelchair to pass through. ADA requirements also dictate the height of the toilet and grab bars.

How Can You Make Use of Your Space?

Having a small space may present challenges when creating your restroom. However, you can manipulate the space to make it appear bigger. For example, you can restructure where you place your partitions and their thickness.

How Will You Brace Your Partitions?

Partitions come in many shapes and sizes. You can choose from an assortment of options for mounting your stalls, which can contribute to the feel of your bathroom.

The most common bathroom partition mounting system is one that is overhead-braced and floor-mounted. It's the easiest to put in and the most cost-effective, as there is no special ceiling or flooring to install.

A ceiling-hung partition extends from the ceiling and braces against the wall. You must have ceiling supports for this type of partition. This mount is easy to clean and works best in areas with low traffic.

Floor-mounted partitions work in areas with low ceilings. They are popular because they are simple to install.

Because of their extra support, floor-to-ceiling partitions are ideal for high-traffic restrooms. Cleanliness is crucial in these areas, and these mounts are easy to clean.
